PREVENTATIVE ORAL HYGIENE SERVICES

During the initial visit and recall visit the dental hygienist carefully reviews the medical history with the patient. We need to be aware of allergies, medications the patient is taking, or if the patient requires to premedicate prior to any dental procedures. After the medical history is reviewed we proceed to the extra and intra oral exam.

We examine the head and neck for any obvious lumps or swelling. We palpate the TMJ for abnormal clicking or popping and the lymph nodes for any abnormal findings. The intraoral exam consists of examining the hard and soft tissues. A complete oral cancer screening is performed. Oral cancer is most commonly detected on the floor of the mouth, the tongue, and the cheeks.

The tooth examination is the next part of the dental exam. The dental hygienist records missing and decayed teeth as well as existing restorations. The periodontal evaluation is then completed. We do a complete periodontal charting with notation of bleeding upon probing and areas of gingival recession. Detecting early signs of periodontal disease can prolong or avoid the need for extensive periodontal procedures.

The radiographic exam is an important part of the dental exam. A full mouth set of radiographs is necessary to detect pathology (cysts or abscess), evaluate bone levels and detect dental caries.

We perform a complete prophylaxis for our patients that includes scaling away calculus that remains above and below the gum line. We then polish the surfaces of the teeth with a paste that removes extrinsic stains. If the patient requires it, we will also give a fluoride application.

In addition to our prophylaxis we offer soft tissue management. If patients have periodontal pocketing that are 5mm or deeper with bleeding upon probing they may need scaling and root planing as well as antibiotic treatment.
